My Birthday!

So my birthday came and went super-fast and I had a spectacular several days of celebration.  Joe does not lie when he says I like to celebrate for the whole month, but it isn't entirely my fault.  (Of course.)  I do usually push for a solid week, but then it is nearly Mother's Day by that time, and well the me-time has to start all over again!  I can't help it that I was born near Mother's Day!  But it certainly works to my advantage...
Joe was also very sweet to birthday-toast me with a post of only professionally re-touched photos.  It was a gift unto itself. But, as we like to get to the present-portion of a birthday first thing, I barely had time to brush my teeth, and my hair, well, let's just say this was actually pretty tame for me...
From Sara:

Will, made my number out of legos :):

Ben, of course (a Cars puzzle!):

And Kayte:
Yep, they spoiled me!

Happy Birthday to my baby-no-more!

This is really important.  Ben is already a month into his 4th year, and I have yet to do his bye-bye birthday post.  The milestone post for all the great little stuff he does.
Partly I was waiting to take him for his check-up so that I would know his height and weight and stuff.  Well, that would've come sooner than later if I'd actually made it to his doctor's appointment, but it completely slipped my mind.  And yes, I have an excuse.  I made his appointment on the Tuesday after his birthday.  That I knew.  I even wrote it on my calendar.  What I wasn't anticipating was, the kids had that Monday off from school, and we played and had fun and then we got up the next morning and rushed off to what I thought was a Monday morning.  But here now it was Tuesday.  But I don't look at the calendar on Mondays, cause honestly, who schedules anything on a Monday?  Way way way too busy for anything firm.  So I didn't check the calendar cause I was on auto-pilot-Monday.  It wasn't until 11 that I realized it was Tuesday, and as I was on the road and without my calendar, so I had to call the office to see if I had an appointment, and yes-indeed-I-did-and-it-was-at-10-and-yes, it was clear that my name was permanently inscribed on the bad list.
Anyway we rescheduled.  Ben was extremely put-out with his vaccinations, and I mean really angry at the world, for like, a whole day.  I didn't write down his weight or height and I've now completely forgotten them.  I do know that he made it into the 75th percentile for both height and weight, and I would call and get the exact numbers, but, like I said, I'm on the bad list and waiting that out a bit.  Ben is still crazy-infatuated with his doctor and goes up and says hello to him every Sunday at church.  He even has a sweatshirt that reminds him of his doctor that he has appropriately named his "doctor sweatshirt."  I think it is brilliant that doctors don't administer the shots themselves.
Other things I love about my four-year-old Ben:
He still has great round collagen cheeks that he lets me kiss on whenever I like and however many times as I possibly can.
He sleeps at least two hours every afternoon.  I almost always have to wake him up!
He loves the wind in his hair.  He likes me to roll his window down so he can hang out of it (literally, to where my heart is racing), and he says, "He-lllooo wind!  Come on in!"  and one time when we drove past a jogger, he laughs and points at him and yells, "Ha ha!  We're beating you!!!"
He plays basketball really well.  Seriously.  It's like he knew we were gonna make him.
He loves puzzles.
He still remembers to ask me for a snuggle.  It's occasional, and much less than before, but sometimes.
He loves kid-care at the gym.  He is the main motivator for getting me there most of the time.
He will eat pretty much anything.  Which is really unusual for a child of mine.  But he doesn't like pears.  Don't even ask him.  He will also finish his entire plate every night and never ask for more.  Not more, not less.  Just whatever I gave him and then off he goes.
He insists on dressing himself, and because he is my fourth, I let him.
His little pull-ups are getting drier every night.  I told him he'd get a sticker for every one that was dry and that totally made.his.day.
He's an angel when he's alone with me, and a total fighter when surrounded by siblings.
He's my baby, and I'm gonna take full advantage until he's old enough to use scissors sharp enough to cut his own apron-strings.

What's not to love?

I miss my blog :(

I know.  It's my own fault.
And I have to come up with new and creative reasons for why I've been playing hookey.  Not so much for you the reader...but for my children, who will someday read all my blog books and I'm sure be dying to know why I just flaked out for weeks at a time.  Especially since every bit of their lives are newsworthy.  And that's not sarcasm.  I mean it.  We've had front page news almost daily.  (There are four of them, so if they only did something spectacular once every week, I'd still have a full-time writing gig.)
So.  I've put everyone down for naps, wrapped myself up in a blanket, and snapped open a fresh caffeine-free diet coke...and then I realized Joe took his fishing-camera fishing today.  And because I've stolen his camera to capture all the latest and greatest, I am currently pic-less.  Again.  That'll teach me to covet thy husband's Nokia.
(And if you are wondering about the blanket, it's because in my quest to keep my skyscraper apartment from stifling me to death in our unseasonably 80 degree weather, I've been neurotic about keeping a constant breeze going from 7 pm to 7 am daily.  I'm actually a bit proud of my learning curve in this matter.  Last night I woke up and my nose was just this side of frozen.  And now I'm cuddled up with a blanket and craving some chai.  But I've been so very good about the caffeine thing....)
Anyway.  I'm sure I have a photo or ten two on my own camera....

Will.

Today, I took advantage of a no-running-group-Saturday, and slept till nearly 9.  Will runs into my room to wake me up, all dressed for the 2 mile run I promised him for this morning.  I tell him I need 5 to get ready.  And he hops out.
I'm pulling some running gear out of my drawer and Kayte walks in.
"How cold is it out there?" says I.
"Yeah, it's really cold..."says she.  And I toss another layer in my pile.  But Kayte was concerned. "But you're still running, right?  I mean, Will's really excited to go...."
And he was.  He hopped around me as I got my granola bar and laced up my shoes.  Like a puppy-dog.
We were off!  We ran all the way to Jude's house and back.  Even did a couple of hills, cause Will said it'd be a good challenge.
"I like this even better than I thought I would."  which was hard for me to imagine, cause he literally talked about it all week long.  "I love running."  says he.  We were almost back to the house and he says, "Well, I still have almost 50% of my energy left."
"Oh yeah," says I.  "Should we do another mile?"  with absolutely no intention of doing so.
He thought about it a minute and then, "well....I could do it with you later today!"
I'd love to pack up my enthusiastic little Energizer Bunny and take him with me for Bloomsday tomorrow....it won't be long now, I can tell.  For now, two miles leaves him laid out on the kitchen floor with his tongue hanging out....Like a puppy-dog.
Love him.

Paula Turns 28....Again

Paula recently celebrated her birthday month in typical full month fashion. She delights me and the kids more and more each year!

And if a blog post wasn't proof enough of how much we appreciate you, here we are baking our first ever Paula b-day cake:

Happy birthday babe!

Sing off!

Ben trying to drown out mama's-turn-with-the-radio-dial-Martina-McBride with his bestest rendition of "You are My Sunshine."
Ben won that one.

Obviously.

Good. Day.

It was raining hard outside, the kids just up from naps, my house was scrubbed clean, the washer thundering above me with the last load of laundry for the day.  I was finally getting to those chocolate chip cookies I was craving, and pretty psyched that they'd be ready by the time that I had to get the olders from school.  Totally loving the fact that there was finally no extra-curriculars to hurry off to as soon as the bell rang for the day.  Sara was reading and Ben was hanging out with her in the window in our kitchen and, just like a boy, he was trying to dissassemble the cord from the window shade.
Finally he looked up at her and said, "So Sara, how was school today?"
"Good." she says.
"Did you love it? ....I sure missed you when you were at school."
And my heart breaks just a little....

Sure beats yesterday, when I was so hectic and crazy that I forgot to acknowledge the big orange "YOU'RE OUT OF GAS" light and had to pray my way to the gas station where I managed to pump 22.23 gallons of gas into what I always thought was a 22 gallon tank.

Two fantastic examples of God's blessings :)  My cup overflows.

Run.

Hee hee.  Love this.
I recently committed to my very first 1/2 marathon.  Ever.  Today, I ran my first 5 mile race.  Ever.  I was so excited when I hit the finish line minutes under my goal time, I nearly cried.  I couldn't believe it!  And I loved it!  Which is even more surprising than the running itself.
I made Kelly promise to run with me for the CDA 1/2, and because I'm a newbie (or maybe cause I'm outrageously neurotic) I had to call her and call her and call her till we had a very detailed training plan.  And then, I had to buy new shoes, and a new shirt, and new shorts.  Cause everyone knows new stuff makes you run faster.  Four more weeks!!!

And the girls wow....

The girls wrapped up their ballet season with an ah.maz.ing recital...it may be a bit of a maternal bias, but I'm pretty sure they are gorgeous and supremely talented....
 Pre-recital photo ops.

Love this little bit of sass :)

We got front and center seats and Kayte couldn't stop grinning at us.  Loved it!

 The captivated audience.

 Lots of cousins....

....and lots and lots and lots of flowers.

Proud. mama.

I see tulips!

So...Joe and I had the opportunity to head west for the tulip festival this year!  I'd heard about it growing up, but I've never been!  So we packed our little bags, sent the kids in many millions of directions and hit the road...
We managed to score great weather, and the tulips were beautiful.

Does this look like he's super-excited?
This one's better:

We went to a famous salmon barbeque hosted by the Kiwanis and checked out the Mt. Vernon Street Fair.  (Footlong corndogs and chocolate-covered strawberry kabobs.  Need I say more?)
It was a relaxing little jaunt across Washington, and some much-needed downtime.  It has been a record-crazy three months and it was nice to slow down.
Some other pics:
An entire building housing...a telephone???

And this little gesture nearly broke me.  Seriously boys.  Take a page from this boy's book.  I can pretty much guarantee she said yes.

Summer yet?

So, it reached maybe 78 degrees today here - yahoo!- and Sara was just curious, "Why didn't they open the pool?"
Seriously, though. Why?

Yum!

My new favorite lunch:
1 Oroweat Italian Herb Pocket Thin pocket
1 T. Skotidakis Jalapeno Greek Yogurt Dip
1 slice of tomato
1/2 a handful of lettuce greens
1 (or 2, if you are passionate) slice of bacon
I get this particular greek yogurt at Costco, and I haven't yet seen it anywhere else, but it is definitely an important ingredient!  You could try some ranch dressing, but I guarantee, it will just not be the same.
K turned me on to the Pocket Thins.  The plain are fine, but I like plenty of flavor so I get the italian herb.  I think I will have to insist on that as well.
Now the bacon.  I've never tried the turkey stuff, but pigs have been doing it right for a long time...and at this sized portion, you don't save that much of your health by choosing turkey (authentic is almost always better, in only my humblest of opinions).  But you do what you like.
I bake my bacon on a rack over a foil-lined cookie sheet at 400 for 20 minutes.  So much less mess and attention.
This li'l sandwich packs a good punch, involves all four food groups (with the added bonus of some real fat, also part of the pyramid, ya know!), all for under 200 calories!  So if you've done your lunges, you could probably have two!
Did I mention there's bacon?  'Nuff said.

Why yes, I do. Thanks for asking.

And yes, I am.  A sucker for marketing.
