Partying With Jemma

Last night was Jemma's shower at Katie Grauke's house. It was quite a party and Jemma got lots of great stuff!

Jemma is modeling her new homemade blankie and cap, and showing off how she can suck her finger and thumb at the same time!

She was soo good! She slept about a half an hour and then she just laid awake watching everyone for the rest of the night.

Ava got to come along and help open gifts!

Sweetie!

Little Helper

Joe has assigned the kids some daily chores. Tonite is Kayte's night to do the dishes. And, as every mother knows, it is easier to do it all by myself, but hopefully it will pay off in the end :)

Still in her ballet uniform from earlier in the day. . .

She sure loves to help out though, that's nice!

I really needed to go to the grocery store today and I really needed to clean the house too. Wednesday is usually my cleaning day. I told Joe last night that I was going to get up at 6:30 and go shopping all by myself.
He laughed.
I know, I didn't believe me either.
Then I was thinking, maybe I could wait until the kids got out of school and all go together :) (I like to be crazy like that sometimes, just to keep my edge.) But this time, I had visions of tearing off the list in four pieces and sending my four children to the four corners of the store to collect everything, and then meeting me at the register. Since Ben can't walk and none of my children can read very well yet, that is just a fantasy for now.
So, I buckled down, loaded up Sara and Ben, and went out at 9 this morning. By the end there wasn't room for Sara to sit and Ben was crying, and it took me until 11 to get everything in the house and put away. But now it is done for two whole weeks, hoo-rah!
Maybe I will clean my house next week. . .
(or get up at 6:30 tomorrow to get it done?)

Rock the Vote!

I found this nifty little poll feature to your right while I was playing around this afternoon. I think it will come in quite handy whenever Joe and I have a friendly bet going.
Until we come up with something, I just made these two up for fun!
So go ahead and send in your vote!

I think this is worth noting. . .

This was the price of gas on the reservation near Lewiston this weekend. The highest I've ever paid for gas was 4.19 at a station in Moscow at the end of July.
Joe says it has to stop dropping eventually. That never occured to me, actually!

A Warm November Day!

Well, it has to be in the mid-50s today and the kids put on their shorts and boots to go out and celebrate the sunny weather!
It seems to me that we may have snuck in a few too many Leap Days over the decades, leading to a snowy June and a sunny November.

Will got out all the bikes. I'm sure Joe had them all stored away for the winter already!

Goofing off!

Ben has to watch from the window, because he hasn't figured out how to use his legs yet!

Joe spent half of Saturday raking leaves in our backyard with our Whitling friends this weekend. The place has been winterized and I am all ready to watch the first snow. But everything looks green and warm still. And this morning I watched the tops of our bare trees turn orange from the sunrise. It is turning out to be a very lovely November!

Cute!

The other day I was doing Sara's hair and when I was done I said, "Ooo Sara, you are sooo pretty!"
"Yeessss, and I'm tute too!" said she.

A Natural Disaster

Last night I came home at 9:00 expecting a nice warm fire and a cold glass of wine. But Joe was nowhere to be found. I looked in every room, but even Sara was out of bed. Ben was still sleeping peacefully in his crib so I knew Joe couldn't have gone far. I heard noises in the basement and then the basement door alarm went off!
I started to believe there may be intruders in my house so I went to get the phone before venturing defenseless down to the dark basement. Halfway there I met Joe, soaking wet from head to toe.
Flood in the basement! This of course means a lot of work for Joe, but much excitement for the children, who were up an hour past bedtime!
I let them all snuggle together in our bed so they could get some rest while Joe figured out a solution to all that non-stop rain!

This is how I found Sara and Kayte later that night!
Children find peace so easily, don't they?

Pirates and Peter Pan!

Will has been a bit restless lately. He spends most of the day being a "pillbox", a term he made up himself. Basically it means that he is picking mercilessly on any sister who happens to be around (or me!).
I called Joe one day, desperate for a way to entertain this tazmanian devil and he e-mailed me this link, http://familyfun.go.com/Resources/pirate_treasure_map.pdf which contains a super-cool treasure map!
Kayte and Will colored their own maps and went off to the basement to hunt for buried treasure.

Will would much rather be Captain Hook than Peter Pan!

See this look - this isn't acting, he means it!

Chronicles of Narnia

Joe has started reading "The Horse and His Boy" to the kids after dinner. With all the chatting during the meal, the kids usually have quite a lot of food left when we are done, so it is a nice time to squeeze in some quality entertainment.
Last night, Ben got to sit at the table and listen in too. I loved how he listened so intently to his daddy's voice!

Pancakes & Vino! I love Sundays!

We had a bit of a rough night on Saturday. Sara is still waking us up in the middle of the night (waking Joe! :) for a potty run, and she had a tough time getting back to sleep this time. But no trouble waking up at 6 for the day.
Anyway, we decided to take the late church service this time. So we had a nice leisurely Sunday morning. Joe made pancakes shaped like gingerbread boys, hearts, and stars.
We spent the afternoon by a cozy fire and then dinner at Joe's parents. (Meatballs, dee-licious!)

In the evening, Joe made a second fire and we polished off this bottle of wine while watching A Good Year. One of my all time favorite flicks, but best enjoyed with a good wine.
(I discovered this wine at a wedding this fall. It's a red, but surprisingly, that didn't seem to bother my tastebuds. Maybe I'm growing up ;)

Lunchtime!

I just like this picture because all 4 of my children are sitting down at the same time!
Will is goofing off, Sara is touching the pumpkin that I told her 14 times not to touch, and I'm pretty sure Ben is choking on a cracker!
But at first glance, it is all very nice and peaceful!

RAARRRGGGHHH!

Will kept asking me to help him make a mask the other day. I said I just needed to clean up a bit to make room for his project.
"It's not a project, it's a mask! Can you say "mask"?
Then Kayte came home from school with her new bat mask and they spent the entire afternoon in a very dark living room being very quiet and not daring to step into the light.
Needless to say, I got some work done that day!

The year 2008

Kayte and I have been reading the American Girl Doll books lately and one of the books mentioned how back in the 40s, families would often gather around the radio at the end of the day to hear the latest serial adventure.
Well, now it is 2008, and this family is sitting around the fire playing the Thomas the Train Memory Game on our laptop which is equipped with wireless internet.
My, how times do change!

Ben turns 7!

Ben is practicing standing up all by himself (with a little help from the window ledge!)

Look ma! No hands!

That's a little sock in his hand. His very favorite toy is his sock (just like a little puppy!) If you put a sock in one hand, the opposite thumb goes straight into his mouth and everything is quiet. I can never find two socks at once because they are always being used as toys. If I am lucky enough to find a pair, the second I put them on, he pulls them both right off and goes right for his thumb!

Oh yeah, Ben voted for the first time ever! He is very patriotic!

Sweet Ben is 7 months old already! His sleep schedule is staying much the same, although, as I write this I can hear him chatting away in his crib after just an hour nap this afternoon. I'm still crossing my fingers that he will go back to sleep without waking anyone else up. Not likely on both counts!
He is eating crackers (Ritz are his favorite) with much gusto and an even bigger mess. He likes to be fed cheerios, but not feed himself, it just frustrates him how they disappear in his fist after working so hard to pick them up! He does not like rice cereal, squash, bananas, or potatoes, and I've been lazy about experimenting with anything else, just happy he will do crackers!
He is a tummy sleeper and he has the loudest holler of any baby I know!
He still likes to be entertained by his siblings, especially if they lean in close enough so he can give their hair a good pull!
He is taking a good bottle about twice a day which works well for both him and I for now.
He has been a very easy and predictable little guy so far - I just can't wait until he is walking, cause he's just so heavy!

Trick or Treat!

At 4:00 I started getting everyone dressed in their costumes to head downtown for some early trick-or-treating. It was a fine fall day!
By 4:30 it was pouring pouring rain!
We waited out the rain at Grandma Annie's house and then it was off to the Driskill neighborhood for some real good-old-fashioned door-to-door!

Running in the dark, Sara was always behind!

Little Will, teaching her how it is done.

Pals! Kayte and Ava walked down the street in front of us, just holding hands and chatting away!

The neighbors were so happy to see real-live trick-or-treaters that they always let the kids help themselves. Sara quickly became a pro, grabbing candy hand over fist until someone (usually me!) told her enough!
She never got tired of carrying that heavy pumpkin full of candy! At one point, Grandpa John offered to carry it for her, but she couldn't walk and keep her eyes on it at the same time, so she insisted on carrying it herself!

Blanket Fort!

Joe had to work on Saturday because of some side activities this week (birth of baby, fishing - the usual :)
And I just wasn't motivated to do anything, so instead just let the kids do pretty much what they wanted.
I actually constructed this little fort. I'm a little out of practice and Will was kind enough to mention that he didn't think that it really looked like a fort!
But they were entertained by it for at least 1/2 an hour!

More on Jemma. . .

This is still in the hospital - I love all her dark hair!

Uncle Joe.

She wrapped her arm around mine - see, she already loves her aunt!

And I got to hold her some more Saturday night. Nine lbs. sure looks tiny!
