My first baby-love turns 11.

I had to get this big day out into the blogosphere tout de suite, because it was so fun, I didn't want to forget a minute of it!  I think for my birthday next year, I'd like to do this day over again :)
Well, except for one thing.  The alarm went off.  At 6 am.  It was still dark.  Kayte loves loves loves the morning and she had big plans to head out to the local diner with her dad for an early breakfast.  She ran down the hallway, and just like Cinderella, the resident mouse popped out for a quick hello!  (They're so much cuter when they're wearing little tees.  Trust me.)
Bright-eyed Kayte.  Joe's still sleeping.

She came back at first light and opened a pile of gold presents.  It was Joe's idea to go all-out with the "Golden Birthday" theme, and it was such a huge hit!

I tried to talk Kayte into playing hookie with me all day, but she's much too responsible for that!  She headed off to school for the "testing" part of the day, and then I kidnapped her at lunchtime...

But first we had to share a great big cookie with the class...

Lunch at Applebees.

Kayte, texting her youngest cousin "happy half-birthday".  Joelle turned 6 months old today  :)
Then we headed to Pullman cause Kayte insisted on spending 1/24th of her birthday at her favorite place: the library!  And we spent some time shopping, but we had to head back before not too long, to get ready for the main event!  I think Kayte's been planning this one for a year or two...a six-course meal at home with her family.  She planned out the whole menu...

I think she's requested a 'Barbie cake' since she was four years old.  This year, we graduated to a mermaid playing in the sand and the surf... She set the table herself, and helped me create the menus:

Finally, 6 pm our two guests arrived and everyone was dressed to the nines!  It took some coaxing to get the boys into costume, but then they slipped right into their parts...

My beautiful baby-girl!

Kayte loves tomato soup for some reason...perfect first course!

The cousins had so much fun!  I just loved listening to them talk and couldn't stop taking pics....I had to get some video to catch the moment...it was so.fun.

Course two.

Course three.

Course four.

...and finally, the cake!

...and course six, my favorite!

Jams & Presents....

& Giggles...

...and one just for me.
In eleven years as a mom, I've learned a lot!  A lot more than I ever thought I would need to know.  But two things stand out to me the most lately.  First, just like the lady in the public bathroom told me ten years & three hundred and twenty-five days ago, these days fly by.  I remember rolling my eyes at her (to myself, of course) cause yeah, yeah, I know....  But I didn't know.  Not really.
And secondly, I know that I will spend most of my entire life (not just the stuff that's left over), I will spend much of that time trying to recreate this night.  This dinner party.  My children are mine for such a short time, and this sitting around a table together and just listening to them all be young and sibling-ish.  I'm gonna want that back.
I told the kids tonight that I'd never done such a fancy party, in all Joe and my married years together, this was it!  And they laughed and thought that was great fun, that we'd get all fancy for just 'a bunch of kids'.  But truly, does it get any better than that?  These kids are my heart.
And Kayte.  Kayte, sweet eleven, I think it's really the last year of being 'all kid'.  She is sweet and giving and sensitive and talented and trustworthy.  Things mean something to Kayte.  She has such a heart for her savior and wants to learn learn learn.  She has an insatiable thirst for reading.  I don't know how we'll ever keep up with it!  I thought I loved her 11 years ago, cause I felt my heart burst that day.  But she just kept growing and growing and growing in there.  I was so happy to just spend today with her.
Happy Golden Birthday, Kayte.  I will never forget it.  Love you.

Light-hearted cuisine.

6 pm.  Sunday night.
Will:  Hey mom, are we having "normal" food tonight?  Or something like pizza or mac?"
Clearly it is soccer/football season that barely misses colliding with basketball season, meets crockpot season.  It's gonna get a little crazy up in here!

Ben:

"Hey Mama?" says he.  "You are one.dynamite.gal."
I'm gonna go ahead and take that as a compliment :)

Wait...what??

I pulled up to the school to drop the kids off this morning, and my baby in the backseat unbuckles and hops out of his carseat.  And I thought, "Wait!  Where is he going?"
And then I remembered.  He's in kindergarten.
My little nest is empty this morning. :(

Kindergarten smarts.

Ben is learning so much and he's gettin' pretty excited about it.
Today, he looks at me shocked, "Do you know that 'Casebolt' has a silent E??!?"
"Does it?"  says I, cause I'm not quite the phonics master...yet.
"Yes!  Cause the 'a' says it's name!"
Ta DA!
*****
And later at dinner...
Ben:  "Do you know why you can't see God?"
Joe:  "Mmm, why's that?"
Ben:  "Because of His hands."
Joe:  "What do you mean?"
Ben, cups his little hands, and in a very serious voice:  "Because He's got the whole world in His hands."

...just a little family gathering.

Gpa Joe came up for a visit this week!  He is pushing 90, but you wouldn't know it.  He can keep up with the best of them!  We managed to all sit down for a meal on Sunday....
...little cuties.  The stuff that Norman Rockwell is made of :)

Joelle is happy to hang!

We all fit in one room :)
(Ooo, that gorgeous bouquet in the back there was for me!  Fall flowers are the best!)

Loved listening to his stories, as soon as the kids wrapped up their echoing chorus from the kids' table....what a great big life!

Growing up!

Fifth grade means you get to cover all your textbooks!  It certainly feels like a grown-up thing to do!  I was laughing about the names inside some of the books...some of those kids I went to school with waaaayyy back in the day.  It's so fun to live your life all over again through your kids!

Summer Post Finale - The Annual Casebolt Family Camping Trip

Our favorite summer playground?  Dworshak!  I think this is our 5th year for our family camping trip, but we've been going there for ages!  The first time I went with my dad back when I was about 8 or 10, and then yearly in college.  We love it!  It's quiet, the water's warm, and this year we had tons of glass!  The bees were completely out of control, so we ate our meals inside our cabin, so they mostly left us alone...  I love a campground with AC, beds, and showers :)
First thing we do is hit the water and motorboat over to a floating dock.  This is Ben's favorite part:

And we do a lot of synchronized diving...this year Sara made the team!

Sara was pretty excited to get to swim without her lifejacket...she does pretty good!

Did a lot of tubing!  Tried (pretty) hard to get Kayte to fly...she loved it!

Camping wouldn't be camping without an early morning jaunt out with the rod (bedhead and all!)  This is definitely Will's favorite part, a little time with just his dad...

Success!
What an awesome trip!  Farewell summer!

The Fourth Annual Casebolt/Sawyer Grill-Off

This year promised to be fun!  Kayte was competing in the cupcake contest for the first-time ever, and I was playing the rookie role in the burger grill-off.  Kayte landed third place out of eight with her apple pie cupcake...such a genius concept!  I couldn't quite seal the deal with my burger, but I was just happy they liked it!  :)
Always a beautiful evening and tons of food and loads of friends and family!

Oh yes, it was the day before Dave's 60th birthday, and what better time to present him with his gift: a kegorator full of Mac n Jack!

Happy Birthday Boy!

Getting down to business...

The winner, working her magic with her homemade buns!

The judges.  Somehow K & E always score a seat at this table???

It wouldn't be a party without a precious babe sleeping!

Tallying the efforts....most of us were so full after the judging we barely made it into the stack of food on the buffet table.  It is a rough.life.

Cupcake judges...

Nice job Heather!  What an unforgettable party!
...next year I need a seat at the judge's table :o)
